Overcoming the Inertia of Starting

inertia

Inertia according to Wikipedia is the tendency to do nothing or remain in an unchanged position. You might have the potential, but you do nothing about it, you might have the skills, knowledge but you do nothing with it. While starting simply means to cause to happen or begin to happen.

Starting is one of the most difficult things to do because it has to do with movement and action, for a lot of people it’s the most challenging part of the task while a few don’t struggle with that. The people affected by this inertia already have what they want to do or execute or planned out, but they are still held bound by this inertia.

It doesn’t matter how big the project, dream or business is, they just won’t start. Is either they develop a cold foot, or their feet becomes bound to a point or motion.

Remember Newtons 1st law of motion? “every Object continues in a state of rest or constant motion, unless acted upon by an external force”

There is a force that holds everything down from moving or starting

So I have outlined some steps to help you overcome this holding force I termed the inertia of Starting.

  1. If you are not a self-starter: you will need to have an accountability partner on your projects or executions, this could be your wife if you are married, your best friend or someone you know will be that external force that will give you that nudge to start moving. For me its my wife and my best friend.
  2. Partnership: If you are running a project or want to start a business, look for starters or those with strong starting ability to be part of your team, they will compliment your own ability. partnering with people with like minds but different skills and drive in any venture is the easiest way to get anything started. Be ready to move when they start moving, because that’s what you need.
  3. Understand your strength and let people who can start it take the lead. Share the ideas with trusted partners and you will be surprised what you can achieve. Be humble enough to admit it’s not your strength and thats why you need help. Many people have suffered in silence and remain in the region of mediocrity for years because of pride.

Alost everyone sometimes in life needs an external force to help us move, newton laws of motion are still effective and valid till date.

To your success
